Herbicide applications are rarely effective against mature weeds, increasing management costs.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-classic\"><div class=\"max-width-row\">\n\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><div class=\"max-width-row\">\n<p>Herbicide-resistant <a href=\"https:\/\/growiwm.org\/index.php\/iwm-toolbox\/search-weeds\/palmer-amaranth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span class=\"tadv-color\" style=\"color:#97d03e\">Palmer<\/span><\/a><span class=\"tadv-color\" style=\"color:#97d03e\"><a href=\"https:\/\/growiwm.org\/index.php\/iwm-toolbox\/search-weeds\/palmer-amaranth\/\"> <\/a><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/growiwm.org\/weed\/palmer-amaranth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span class=\"tadv-color\" style=\"color:#97d03e\">amaranth<\/span><\/a><span class=\"tadv-color\" style=\"color:#97d03e\"> <\/span>and <a href=\"https:\/\/growiwm.org\/weed\/waterhemp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span class=\"tadv-color\" style=\"color:#97d03e\">waterhemp<\/span><\/a> must\u00a0be sprayed with effective herbicides before they reach 4 inches tall in order to control these weeds successfully.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-classic\"><div class=\"max-width-row\">\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"wp-block-classic\"><div class=\"max-width-row\">\n\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-heading\"><div class=\"max-width-row\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><span style=\"color:#004749\" class=\"tadv-color\">Weed species identification:<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-classic\"><div class=\"max-width-row\">\n\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><div class=\"max-width-row\">\n<p>Accurate weed ID is important for effective management because herbicide recommendations vary according to species, as do some mechanical, cultural, and biological strategies. Some species can look similar to each other from afar, but may have drastically different management requirements. They should be examined closely before choosing herbicide programs. Weed identification resources are available<span style=\"color:#97d03e\" class=\"tadv-color\">&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/growiwm.org\/weed-identification\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>here<\/strong><\/a><\/span>, or by contacting your state\u2019s extension weed science specialist.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-classic\"><div class=\"max-width-row\">\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"wp-block-classic\"><div class=\"max-width-row\">\n\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-heading\"><div class=\"max-width-row\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><span style=\"color:#004749\" class=\"tadv-color\">Scouting procedure: <\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-classic\"><div class=\"max-width-row\">\n\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><div class=\"max-width-row\">\n<p>The goal when scouting is to note the weed populations throughout the whole field. For a 100-acre field, make 5-10 stops across the field. At each stop, walk 10 paces (or 30 feet) and record the following:<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-classic\"><div class=\"max-width-row\">\n\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-list-container\"><div class=\"max-width-row\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Weed species present<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Weed size\/height and life stage<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lifecycle (summer annual, winter annual, perennial)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Severity of the infestation based on number of plants (low, medium, high)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-classic\"><div class=\"max-width-row\">\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"wp-block-classic\"><div class=\"max-width-row\">\n\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-heading\"><div class=\"max-width-row\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><span style=\"color:#004749\" class=\"tadv-color\">Scouting prior to cash crop planting:<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-classic\"><div class=\"max-width-row\">\n\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><div class=\"max-width-row\">\n<p>Scout fields prior to planting in order to:<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-classic\"><div class=\"max-width-row\">\n\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-list-container\"><div class=\"max-width-row\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ensure the burndown treatment was effective before weeds become too large control effectively with chemicals<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Evaluate the potential need for alternative pre-plant weed management strategies such as tillage<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ensure that crop seeds are being planted into weed-free fields (\u201cstart clean\u201d)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-classic\"><div class=\"max-width-row\">\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"wp-block-classic\"><div class=\"max-width-row\">\n\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-heading\"><div class=\"max-width-row\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><span style=\"color:#004749\" class=\"tadv-color\">Scouting after cash crop planting:<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-classic\"><div class=\"max-width-row\">\n\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><div class=\"max-width-row\">\n<p>Scout soon after planting to determine the efficacy of preemergence and to decide if further treatments are necessary at this time.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-classic\"><div class=\"max-width-row\">\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"wp-block-classic\"><div class=\"max-width-row\">\n\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-heading\"><div class=\"max-width-row\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><span style=\"color:#004749\" class=\"tadv-color\"><strong>Determine if postemergence treatment is needed<\/strong>:<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-classic\"><div class=\"max-width-row\">\n\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><div class=\"max-width-row\">\n<p><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-classic\"><div class=\"max-width-row\">\n\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><div class=\"max-width-row\">\n<p>Weed emergence can continue over weeks or months.&nbsp; Even if preemergence herbicides were applied and the field received timely rainfall for incorporation, fields should be scouted about four weeks after planting for need of additional weed management.&nbsp; Be sure to note weed species and height, in order to maintain effectiveness of herbicide treatments and minimize competition with the crop.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-classic\"><div class=\"max-width-row\">\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"wp-block-classic\"><div class=\"max-width-row\">\n\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-heading\"><div class=\"max-width-row\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><span style=\"color:#004749\" class=\"tadv-color\">Scouting for resistance:<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-classic\"><div class=\"max-width-row\">\n\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><div class=\"max-width-row\">\n<p>Scout for weed species that are known to have herbicide resistance, especially if they have been sighted in your area or county. Failure of an herbicide application to control a weed does not necessarily mean it\u2019s&nbsp;herbicide-resistant. While genetic resistance must be confirmed through laboratory testing, these signs can be evidence of potential resistance:<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-classic\"><div class=\"max-width-row\">\n\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-list-container\"><div class=\"max-width-row\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Spreading area of a single weed species;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Failure of an herbicide application to control a weed species that it is usually effective at the applied dose, especially if other surrounding weeds are successful controlled<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Within the same weed species in the same field, some plants survived while the rest died.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-classic\"><div class=\"max-width-row\">\n\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><div class=\"max-width-row\">\n<p>If you suspect resistant weeds, contact your local extension agent. Collect a sample and provide them with information about the field conditions and the size of the weed population.
